Disney+ movie Togo tells the true story of a musher and his hero dog on an Alaskan tundra trek to deliver serum for an outbreak.

Togo poster, Willem Dafoe; Disney+

Togo, a fact-based movie about a legendary dog sled run to deliver an outbreak-combatting serum, may have the makings of an inspirationally adventurous family-driven Disney theatrical offering, but the film is instead headed to a device near you as a (non-Mandalorian) offering on streaming platform Disney+.

Four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe headlines Togo as Norwegian sled rider Leonhard Seppala, sharing top billing with the film’s eponymous character, a 12-year-old hero dog who, despite his advanced age, leads Seppala’s team on a perilous 1925 trek across 674 miles of the Alaskan tundra from Seward to deliver life-saving serum to those suffering from a diphtheria outbreak in Nome.

Ericson Core directed Togo, bringing experience from 2015’s Point Break remake and 2006 Mark Walhberg-headlined Vince Papale biopic Invincible. Core worked off a script by Tom Flynn (Gifted, Highboys and Lowboys).

Togo Trailer

The trailer for Togo showcases a inspirationally thrilling adventure flick that will certainly warm the hearts of dog lovers enough to thaw the film’s blizzardy conditions, and just might give Baby Yoda a run for his money in terms of cuteness on Disney+.

Togo Release Date

Togo premieres on Disney+ on Friday, December 20.

Togo Details

As the official synopsis for Togo reads:

"Togo is the untold true story set in the winter of 1925 that treks across the treacherous terrain of the Alaskan tundra for an exhilarating and uplifting adventure that will test the strength, courage and determination of one man, Leonhard Seppala, and his lead sled dog, Togo.”

Interestingly, the film’s focus on Togo distinguishes this film from other depictions of Seppala’s Serum Run, most of which tend to focus on his better-known dog, Balto, notably the 1995 animated feature, Balto, which featured the voice of Kevin Bacon as an anthropomorphized version of the dog who led the journey's final leg.

Star Willem Dafoe, who’s earned Oscar nods for Platoon, Shadow of the Vampire, The Florida Project and (just this year,) At Eternity’s Gate, is coming off November’s release of the Edward Norton-directed crime drama, Motherless Brooklyn, and also notably appeared in director Robert Eggers’ acclaimed black-and-white horror drama, The Lighthouse as well as last year’s DC comics movie smash, Aquaman.

He is joined in the cast by names such as Julianne Nicholson (I, Tonya), Christopher Heyerdahl (Van Helsing), Jamie McShane (SEAL Team), Michael McElhatton (Game of Thrones), Michael Gaston (Treadstone) and Michael Greyeyes (True Detective).
