Sting Dons Hellblazer Cosplay, Reveals He’ll Pen 30th Anniversary Foreword

The 30th-anniversary collection of Vertigo’s Hellblazer will feature a foreword by singer/songwriter Sting, who inspired the occult detective’s signature look.

The former frontman of The Police announced his involvement with John Constantine: Hellblazer 30th Anniversary Celebration in a video in which he dons Constantine’s trademark trench coat.

“John and I have a long history, so I’ve written a foreword to the edition, which goes into more detail about our relationship,” Sting said in the video. “So I wish him well, he’s done well for himself. It comes out Oct. 30.”

Introduced in 1984 by writer Alan Moore and artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben in The Saga of Swamp Thing #25, Constantine was the result of Police fans Bissette and Totleben convincing Moore to create a character based on Sting. The occult detective and con artist proved so popular that he made the jump in 1988 to his own title, Hellblazer, which helped to provide the foundation for DC’s Vertigo imprint.

The character has, of course, moved from comic books to live-action film and television, animation and video games. As played by Matt Ryan, Constantine will be a regular series this fall in the fourth season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

On sale Oct. 30 for $39.99, John Constantine: Hellblazer 30th Anniversary Celebration will include Sting’s foreword, essays written by Rich Handley, a comprehensive timeline of the character, three one-page stories from John Constantine: Hellblazer issues 1-2 and 4, and stories written by the likes of Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Garth Ennis, Brian Azzarello, Paul Jenkins, Jamie Delano, including the character’s introduction.
