Octopath Traveler PC Port Leaked By Square Enix

Octopath Traveler looks like it is heading to PC. The Square Enix game is currently only available as an exclusive for the Nintendo Switch, but has been wanted on other platforms for some time. A quickly-deleted post from Square Enix suggests that the RPG is on its way to PC very soon.

When Octopath Traveler was released last year, it was met with near-universal acclaim. The title was seen as a fantastic return to the JRPG gameplay of old, with a well-told story and a cast of enjoyable characters. As a matter of fact, Square Enix struggled to keep up with demand for the game, selling out in both Japan and the US and prompting an apology from the developer.

Such issues won't be a problem with this upcoming PC release for Steam, though. As spotted by Gematsu, a blog post by Square Enix UK announced an upcoming version of the game that will be available through the digital distribution platform. The post itself suggested that Steam users would be able to add it to their Wishlists immediately, and since this is still not available it suggests this particular announcement jumped the gun.

PC gamers who were interested in playing Octopath Traveler but didn't want to take the plunge into buying a Switch will see this as something of a win. After all, the game uses JRPG mechanics in a triumphant fashion, calling back to the heyday of the genre in stylish 2.5D. At the very least, it's been a smash hit on Nintendo's hybrid console.

This upcoming PC release is not the only way in which Octopath Traveler is breaking out from the confines of Nintendo's console, either. Square Enix revealed last month that the RPG is getting a prequel called Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, which will be releasing exclusively for mobile devices. Described as a single-player RPG for mobile, Square Enix will be hoping to scratch that same itch as The Elder Scrolls: Blades, although no doubt the company will be hoping to avoid some of the backlash that the early access version of Bethesda's mobile game is getting.

Given the different platforms that Octopath Traveler is coming to, whether as a re-release or as the aforementioned prequel, it certainly looks as though Square Enix sees the potential in this new franchise. Given the sheer amount of success it's seen so far, and the possibility for further devices to come, fans will be wondering how long it is before a fully-fledged sequel is officially confirmed.
