DC Announces Linewide Vertigo Relaunch

DC Announces Linewide Vertigo Relaunch

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of DC’s Vertigo imprint, the publisher has announced a complete relaunch and rebranding. Now called DC Vertigo, the imprint will start with seven new books that feature talent from video games, television and film. Four of the titles will be monthly series that debut in the fall, with the remaining three set to arrive in 2019.

Kicking off DC Vertigo in September will be Border Town from Eric M. Esquiviel and artist Ramon Villalobos, which tells the story of a crack in the border between worlds that causes monsters of Mexican folklore to spill out into the tiny town of Devil’s Fork, Arizona. New kid in town Frank Dominguez will have to fight the monsters and the tension brewing in the town, who are convinced this is all because of “the illegals.” The following month will bring Ben Blacker and Mirka Andolfo’s Hex Wives, about a conspiracy of men brainwashing a witch coven.

Rounding out 2018’s launch are Bryan Hill and Leandro Fernandez’s American Carnage, about a biracial but white-passing FBI agent named Richard Wright going undercover in a white supremacist group; and Zoe Quinn and Robbi Rodriguez’s Goddess Mode, which focuses on a young woman who does tech support in a future where humanity’s needs are done by a godlike AI. They will arrive in November and December, respectively.

Arriving next year are High Level, Safe Sex and Second ComingHigh Level, from Rob Sheridan and Barnaby Bagenda, is about a selfish smuggler hundreds of years in the future who has a bounty on her head and has to deliver a child to the titular High Level, a mythical city at the top of the world. Tina Horn and Mike Dowling’s Safe Sex is a dystopian sci-fi thriller about a group of sex workers fighting for their right to love in a world whose government monitors and regulates sexual pleasure. Finally, Second Coming by Mark Russell and Richard Pace has God sending Jesus to Earth to learn from the superhero known as Sun-Man, the described “varsity quarterback that God never had.” But Jesus instead decides to spend His time here to set things right.

DC Vertigo will be run by Mark Doyle, former Batman editor and who began his comics career in 2006 at Vertigo. He said in a statement that he views the new imprint as a way to “return to our roots, by spotlighting the most exciting new voices in comics, as well as bringing new voices to comics. … We’re creating a new generation of DC Vertigo classics for readers of all genres.”
